Black plastic can look like a trash can, but the Catalina's rounded body and matte finish keep it from reading that way against a garage or fence. That matters more than any single feature here, because a rain barrel you don't mind looking at is one you'll actually keep hooked up. At 45 gallons, it holds enough for several watering cans without becoming a permanent architectural commitment.
The flat back is the detail we appreciate most. It lets the barrel sit close to a wall and under a downspout without a gap you have to hide with shrubs. The 3.5-foot hose and shut-off valve are also genuinely useful: you can fill a can or run a short hose to a bed without adding a separate kit. The polyethylene body is UV-inhibited and BPA-free, and the fixed lid and small opening make it feel less like an open bucket.
We also like that the 45-gallon size is manageable. It is big enough to matter after a storm, but not so big that every inch of placement becomes a structural decision. Set it on level ground and leave a little air space behind the barrel.
For most yards, this is the decorative barrel we recommend first: it looks tidy, holds a useful amount, and asks little of you beyond a downspout and a level spot.
Bottom line: We recommend the Catalina first for most yards: it looks tidy, holds 45 gallons, and makes watering simple without a lot of fuss.
